Marc Cohn Debuts “The Coldest Corner in the World”
Posted on 12/8/2014
GRAMMY Award winning singer/songwriter Marc Cohn released his first original song in seven years, “The Coldest Corner of the World.”
The new tune, available now on iTunes, was prompted by the request of the filmmakers of Tree Man, a documentary about the seasonal vendors who set up Christmas tree pop ups throughout the streets of Manhattan during the holidays.
A true singer/songwriter in every sense of the word, Cohn writes when he feels compelled and inspired, and the urging of one of the filmmakers, Jon Reiner, certainly inspired him.
“At first, when the director Jon [Reiner] approached me to write a holiday song, I was reticent,” says Cohn. “But then when he said it didn’t have to be a happy song, I gave it a shot. Sometimes an assignment can help spark new ideas. I know it’s been seven years since I released an original song, but I promise it won’t be another seven.”
Lyrically, “Coldest” tells a sweet narrative about Francois, a French Canadian gentleman who comes down to Manhattan every year to sell Christmas trees. The film focuses on the relationships he has forged over the years with his adopted New York families that buy his trees, including a Holocaust survivor on the Upper West Side.
John Leventhal, who has produced and arranged on many Cohn songs dating back to his self-titled debut album, served as the producer for “Colder,” which is the official end title song for the feature documentary film.
