Car Songs - Name Your Favorite!

Silver Thunderbird is only one in a long tradition of songs about cars, or feature them prominently.  Here's a couple of my favorites:

    HOT ROD LINCOLN

(version, 1972) Click the Lincoln for a SMOKIN' live version from Bill Kirchen (who inserts some surprise musical "guests"):

Or you may prefer Charlie Ryan's original (1955):

     - ALSO -

    MERCURY BLUES

    K. C. Douglas (1949) - Sample only:

    Alan Jackson (1993):

    NEXT!   Big Smile

Saw John live at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH last week and this was one of the tunes he performed - it was a foot stomper all right.  He was on stage with Lyle Lovett as part of a series called Intimately Yours.

Marc was part of that series last March - just he and Shane on stage - what a wonderful night that was!

At the risk of making some (who shall remain nameless, unless they choose to publicly gag) gag - I'll put my two cents in for, wait for it, wait for it.....

Route 66 - As performed by Depeche Mode  (does this count as a car song?)

How about Baby You Can Drive My Car, originated by the Beatles, as done by Bobby McFerrin?  It's very nicely done.

    Isn't that about make-up??

    Thunder Road. Obviously.

Driving home for Christmas. Just to be a bit naughty!

The whole album, The 253, by Chris TT. The 253 is a london bus. Does that count? Seriously... cracking record. For instance "Tony Robinson, and his time team, found the Holy Grail in Somerset. Won an Emmy, Won the Nobel Prize, Channel 4 staff got a pay rise..."

    JCB. I'm pushing it aren't I...

The James Taylor song, oft quoted by Mr C, the name of which I don't know, the whole tune I've never heard, but includes the lines "When I die I don't want no coffin, I've thought about it all too often, just strap me in, behind the wheel, and bury me in my automobile..." I often sing this along to the chorus of Silver Thunderbird. Try it. Great counterpoint.

    xx

In fact, that's caused me to go seek out some more...

"Poverty's bad, war is bad, racism's bad, well done have a biscuit..." from Preaching to the Converted. Genius.

    Need to buy these albums.

This is it, but I couldn't find a Youtube for it, unfortunately:

    Artist: James Taylor
    Title: Traffic Jam (Now THERE's a song I can relate to . . . )
    Album: (Live)
    Year: 1993

Damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam.

Well I left my job about 5 o'clock, it took fifteen minutes go three blocks,
Just in time to stand in line with a freeway looking like a parking lot.
Damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam.

Now I almost had a heart attack, looking in my rear view mirror,
I saw myself the next car back, looking in the rear view mirror,
about to have a heart attack, I said,
damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam.

Now when I die I don't want no coffin, I thought about it all too often.
Just strap me in behind the wheel and bury me with my automobile.
Damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam. Damn.

Now I used to think that I was cool running around on fossil fuel,
Until I saw what I was doing was driving down the road to ruin.

Re: Car Songs - Name Your Favorite!

I would warn people who want to hear a version of Traffic Jam to get the live version. Much much better than the recorded one. The same as JT's Sun on the Moon - a great live song which fails to work on record. In fact, do yourself a favour and buy JT's live album - has all the classics!

    Depeche Mode?

    Outside.

    Now!

Sport Utilities Suck! by David Lindley...nice and loud, with the windows rolled down.Big Smile

My ex, an audiophile, used that as a test song when he went speaker-shopping in audio stores and sure turned some heads.
